Abstract

The formation of the historical roads of Iran has been influenced by many natural and human factors. Paying attention to these factors has led to the stability of a large part of the historical roads from ancient times until now, and it has brought the continuation of the life of biological centers and the accumulation of cultural and natural heritage elements along and around the historical roads. Therefore, today, historical corridors, in addition to the role they play as transportation passages, offer a wide range of cultural and historical opportunities based on nature, and due to the connection with biological centers and the accumulation of heritage resources, they require care and sensitivity in management and conservation. This study tries to achieve the semantic network of historical roads by accurately knowing the factors influencing the formation, development, and sustainability of historical roads in Iran. The method of conducting this research is qualitative. The results show that throughout history, only the origin and destination in the communication network of historical roads are not necessary, and the study of the phenomenon of the historical road will not be possible with only a one-dimensional view of the physical environment. Thus, natural geography (from four aspects of ecological resources, environmental threats, registered documents and management and ownership system), human geography (from six aspects of cultural and social life, economic life, human needs and threats, registered documents, environmental drivers and management system) and road geography (from the four aspects of physical characteristics, travel, function, registered documents and management system) can be expressed as the main elements that form the semantic network of the road.
